Should I drip acclimate my fish?

Should You Drip Acclimate?

We all want to keep our fish as healthy as possible, and so we develop certain habits to help with this. We perform routine aquarium maintenance to prevent a buildup of harmful substances. We carefully consider tankmates in order to reduce aggression. We use quarantine tanks to monitor new arrivals and avoid introducing sick fish to a healthy tank. We make every effort possible to keep our water parameters stable and avoid pH swings.

Most methods of keeping our tanks healthy revolve around one concept: trying to reduce the amount of stress our fish are exposed to.

Like people, fish have robust immune systems. Also like people, when they come under stress, fish’s immune systems can become suppressed, allowing pathogens that would normally be fought off to overwhelm the fish. By keeping our fish comfortable and happy, they are less likely to become ill.

Algae Control in Freshwater Aquaria

Algae is a nuisance that virtually every aquarium keeper will have to battle at some point. It is estimated that there is anywhere from 30,000 to over a million species of algae. Fortunately, the number of algae strains commonly seen in aquaria is fairly low, and few if any are actually harmful for the fish. Certain fish love to eat certain types of algae, so in some cases a small amount of algae can be beneficial. But for the most part we try to eliminate algae from our tanks because it looks bad, and why would anyone want to keep an ugly aquarium?

Biosecurity for the Retailer and Hobbyist

Carp species such as Koi and Goldfish are susceptible to several serious pathogens including SVC and KHV.

Biosecurity for the Retailer and Hobbyist

Sooner or later, anybody who keeps fish should start looking into how to integrate biosecurity measures to ensure the long term health and success of their tanks. What exactly is biosecurity? Simply put, it is a fancy term for how to minimize the risk of introducing diseases to your fish. For the large scale suppliers of ornamental fish, biosecurity is a never ending concern. Fish farms and wholesalers have lost their entire inventories, and sometimes even their businesses, as the result of pathogens quickly rampaging through their fish. Does the time and care that these companies put towards this mean that you are completely safe and never have to worry about it? Unfortunately not.

Keeping Tarantulas

Within the realm of keeping captive animals (whether you consider them "pets" or not), there are so many niches that it would seem to be impossible to experience them all. You have to ask yourself a number of questions when deciding what you want to keep. Do you want an animal that is interactive, such as dogs, cats, and many birds, or do you want an animal that is more of a look but don't touch pet, such as fish or certain reptiles? Do you know (and can you meet) the care requirements for this animal for the entirety of its (often long) life? Do you want something fairly common or more unique? Do you find any animal just too creepy to keep, or do you enjoy creatures that other people avoid? If you enjoy the creepier side of the animal kingdom, one of the most underrated pet niches is Tarantula keeping.

The Care of Veiled Chameleons

Perhaps one of the most charismatic and appealing groups of reptiles are the true chameleons. With their renowned ability to change color, eyes that move independently of each other, and long tongue used to catch prey, there are few that cannot become intrigued or even charmed by these unique lizards. While there are several species that are widely available and routinely bred, chameleons are generally more challenging to care for than many other reptiles. However, for those looking to keep chameleons, there is no better species to start with than the veiled chameleon (Chamaeleo calyptratus).

Keeping Lionfish

There are many reasons why people choose to keep aquariums, but for many, the beauty and grace of a fish gliding through the water is an integral pleasure in the hobby. With its ornately flowing fins and delicate appearance, this is perhaps no better example of this than the lionfish of the subfamily Pteroinae. However, despite their appearance, these species are far from being the fragile creatures they might seem on first glance.
